Audubon)1785年生于海地,在法国长大,18岁时移民美国,1851年去世。自童年时期就对鸟类产生了浓厚的兴趣,并立志以最逼真的形式展示出美国的鸟类。据说绘画前,他会先把捕捉的鸟射死,再用金属丝架起来。每幅画都大概要花费60个小时去完成。因此书的大小远远超出了正常的书本,奥杜邦曾在美国一度找不到印刷厂来印制。最终还是在英国的爱丁堡、苏格兰和伦敦找到的印刷厂。。该书曾被誉为19世纪最伟大和最具影响力的著作,目前世界上仅存120套。
