此《The Birds of America》（美国鸟类）由美国博物学家、画家John James Audubon创作。全套插图共四册（四百三十五幅），版画绘制了生活在美国的各种鸟类，共收录497个北美洲的鸟类物种，画作大小与实物一致。 此系列于1827年到1838年间在英国第一次分批出版。

《美国鸟类》作者奥杜邦（John James Audubon）1785年生于海地，在法国长大，18岁时移民美国，1851年去世。自童年时期就对鸟类产生了浓厚的兴趣，并立志以最逼真的形式展示出美国的鸟类。据说绘画前，他会先把捕捉的鸟射死，再用金属丝架起来。每幅画都大概要花费60个小时去完成。因此书的大小远远超出了正常的书本，奥杜邦曾在美国一度找不到印刷厂来印制。最终还是在英国的爱丁堡、苏格兰和伦敦找到的印刷厂。。该书曾被誉为19世纪最伟大和最具影响力的著作，目前世界上仅存120套。

另外作者还在撰写一份配套出版物，即他的《Ornithological Biography》。这套五卷本最初于 1831 年在爱丁堡出版，包含描述每只鸟的生动叙述，并包含其他信息，例如它们的栖息地。

宾夕法尼亚州匹兹堡的威廉·麦卡洛·达灵顿和玛丽·卡森·达灵顿的女儿于 1918 年和 1925 年将他们的家庭图书馆捐赠给了匹兹堡大学，以纪念他们的父亲。《美国鸟类》是达灵顿纪念图书馆收藏的一部分。根据达灵顿先生的一本记录簿，他在 1852 年花了 400 美元购买了整套。
