此套《拉克斯的中国摄影集》由美国《LIFE / 生活》杂志摄影师 George Lacks 拍摄。此套共 1767 幅，照片主要记录了抗日战争结束后中国的时事政治、重要人物、民生状况、上海的美军生活。这些照片大致拍摄于 1945 至 1946 年，拍摄地主要有上海、沈阳、张家口、南京等。

《LIFE / 生活》杂志是美国最具影响力的新闻和人文摄影杂志之一，聚焦重大新闻事件和社会变革。拉克斯职业生涯的很大一部分时间是在上海度过的。他在加入美国《LIFE》杂志之前就已经在上海生活多年，甚至曾担任过中国政府的官方摄影师。拉克斯在《LIFE》期间拍摄了大量的专题报道，涵盖了政治、社会、文化等多个领域。特别是在他前往上海的报道中，他利用自己对中国的深刻理解，拍摄了大量反映中国当时社会面貌的照片。

George Lacks（乔治. 拉克斯，1910-1960）出生于美国新泽西州的纽瓦克，他的父母是波兰和俄罗斯裔的犹太人。曾担任《洛杉矶时报》的摄影记者。二战时期，受雇成为美国《LIFE / 生活》杂志的战地记者，同时也为其他新闻机构供稿。常在欧美洲、东亚等地往来穿梭，拍摄各种战争题材的新闻照片。
