此套《多米尼斯的中国摄影集》由美国《LIFE / 生活》杂志摄影师 John Dominis 拍摄。此套共 1012 幅，照片主要记录了1972年尼克松访华以及1959年土改后的台湾地区。这些照片大致拍摄于 1950 至 1972 年，拍摄地主要有北京、台湾、香港等。

1972年时任美国总统的理查德·尼克松应时任中华人民共和国国务院总理周恩来邀请，对北京、杭州和上海进行的访问，这是美国总统历史上第一次访问中华人民共和国，而且尼克松到访北京期间，还在中南海与中国共产党中央委员会主席毛泽东会面。此次访问是中美邦交正常化的过程中重要的一步。这是美国总统第一次访问当时被认为是其敌对国家的中华人民共和国，同时也终结了两个国家长达二十五年相互隔绝的历史。1972年2月21日，美国总统尼克松抵达北京。2月28日，中美上海联合公报发表，宣布中美两国关系走向正常化，史称尼克松访华。尼克松称此次的访问为“改变世界的一周”。

John Dominis（1921 -2013，约翰·多米尼斯）是一名美国摄影师，二战前后在远东地区服役。退役以后，成为《LIFE》杂志的纪实摄影师和摄影记者。
