此《历代臣鉴》由明宣宗朱瞻基（宣德帝）敕编。全书共三十七卷，以时代为顺序，辑春秋列国至元代历朝将相大臣言行事迹。卷一至二十九为：善可为法（自春秋末期郑子产至元代余阙）。卷三十至卷三十七为：恶可为戒（自西汉田蚡至元代孛罗帖木儿）。此为明宣德元年内府刊本，精写精刻。

每卷首标注 “善可为法” 或 “恶可为戒”，语出于司马光在叙述编写《资治通鉴》时说：“删削冗长，举撮机要，专取国家盛衰，系生民休戚，善可为法、恶可为戒者，为编年一书，使先后有伦，精粗不杂”。

明代由内府司礼监掌握的经厂所刻书世称 “经厂本”，大多选用上品纸墨，行格疏朗，且多为赵体字，精写精刻。

[朱瞻基](https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E6%9C%B1%E7%9E%BB%E5%9F%BA/9679050)（1399年-1435年），明朝第五位皇帝（1425年5月29日-1435年1月31日），年号宣德，明仁宗嫡长子，永乐九年立为皇太孙。终年三十六，庙号宣宗。

二函十册。框27.3x18厘米，10 行 20 字，大黑口，四周双边，双黑对花鱼尾，版心中镌 **臣鑒** 及卷次。
