此套《马达汉亚洲旅行摄影集》由芬兰探险家Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim（中文名：马达汉，或译名曼纳海姆）拍摄。此次共整理了1164幅，记录了其1906-1908年在中国西部的探险考察（军事侦察任务），涉及新疆、甘肃、陕西、河南、山西、内蒙古等地。此套现藏于芬兰国家遗产局。

1906年至1908年，芬兰探险家、时任沙俄骑兵上校的Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim（中文名：马达汉，以下简称马达汉）在中国新疆及西北诸省进行了一次长达两年的历史性探险。这次总行程约1.4万公里的马背之旅，表面上是一次学术考察，实则是针对清朝边疆防务的绝密军事情报搜集行动。马达汉的路线几乎贯穿了整个中国北方边疆，其中新疆是他停留时间最长、考察最深入的地区。马达汉于1908年夏最终抵达北京，完成了横跨亚洲大陆的考察。他随后乘火车返回圣彼得堡，向俄国军方提交了长达数百页的绝密军事报告。马达汉沿途还拍摄了千余幅高质量的玻璃底片。这些照片极其罕见地记录了20世纪初新疆和甘肃的风土人情、市井百态、清军新军面貌以及许多现已消失的古建筑。

这批照片早在1940年就随着马达汉的英文巨著《1906—1908年由西向东横跨亚洲的考察》（*Across Asia from West to East in 1906-1908*）一同面世。1990年，芬兰出版了专门的摄影集。 在2006年（探险一百周年纪念）前后，中国和芬兰两国还联合举办了多场马达汉历史影像展。

Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim（卡尔·古斯塔夫·埃米尔·曼纳海姆，其在华期间取汉名**马达汉**；1867年6月4日—1951年1月27日），芬兰瑞典族，是芬兰第二任摄政（1918-1919年）、芬兰共和国第六任总统（1944-1946年）及芬兰元帅。马达汉出身瑞典裔贵族，毕业于俄国皇家骑兵学校，曾任沙皇宫廷侍卫和御马官，参加过日俄战争。1906年，他以俄属芬兰男爵和探险家身份为掩护，受俄军总参谋部派遣来华执行军事侦察任务，历时两年（1906-1908年）行程1.4万公里，横跨中国新疆、甘肃、陕西等8个省份。考察期间拍摄了大量照片，收集了文物，绘制了地图。
